In honor of May is #mentalhealthawarenessmoth, here are some more excellent psychology resources for you. Who doesn’t love a good podcast? To be able to soak up information while doing other things like cooking, laundry or working out is perfect for all the multi-taskers out there! Here are my top 3 podcasts:
- The Dr. Drew Podcast
Brief description: Dr. Drew is an expert when it comes to treating addiction. I’ve listened to him since my high school days when I would tune-in to his radio show with Adam Corolla: Love Line on KROQ. He still answers listener phone calls in addition to having some of the most intriguing guests in the medical and psychology fields.
My favorite episode in May:
Dr. Drew interviewed comedian Maria Bamford on May 1st. In a candid discussion, Maria talks about her experiences as a comedian managing her anxiety. She and Dr. Drew also talk about the history of psychiatric hospitals and treatment for mental illness. (Pinskey, 2017)
- The Brain Warrior’s Way Podcast
Brief Description: Dr. Amen and Tana Amen, RN interview experts in the health, medical and wellness fields. Dr. Amen has spent years studying and scanning the brain. Through his experiences he has learned to target interventions for brain health and has seen the lives of his patients change dramatically. Tana Amen uses her personal and professional experiences to provide important and insightful information.
My favorite episode in April:
Dr. Amen and Tana Amen interview former football star, Anthony Davis. Davis discussed his experiences playing football and the impact that these experiences had on his brain health. They also discuss the importance of mentors, counselors, coaches and teachers in the lives of children and teens living in high-risk environments. (Amen & Amen, 2017)
- This Life with Dr. Drew and Bob Forrest
Brief Description: If you were a fan of Celebrity Rehab, then you will love this podcast. Dr. Drew and Bob Forrest provide fascinating interviews of experts in the field of addiction as well as recovering addicts. Their discussions are on the pulse of what is going on culturally in America. Frequent topics include narcissism and celebrity culture, millenials in addiction treatment and America’s healthcare system.
My favorite episode in March: #73
Dr. Drew and Bob Forrest talk candidly about addiction and recovery with Celebrity Rehab alumns Sherry Gaba and Shelly Sprague. The guests open up about their personal journeys of healing and their passion for helping others in their road to recovery. (Forrest & Pinskey, 2017)
Mental Health awareness is important. We are living in a time where 1 in 4 persons will be diagnosed with a mental health condition in their lifetime. Luckily, there is a wealth of knowledge at our fingertips from reputable sources in the field on treating these conditions.
